Where will be when?
Day 1 - Saturday, July 17
Leave really freaking early, 5am, and drive like mad to a state park near Knoxville, TN. This is a driving day, nothing more.
Day 2 - Sunday, July 18
Drive again like mad to a state park near New Orleans.
Day 3 - Monday, July 19
Spend the whole day in New Orleans then back to the same state park for sleep.
Day 4 - Tuesday, July 20
My sister's birthday. We'll celebrate by listening to nothing but Bruce Springsteen. Huzzah! We'll also drive north through a small town in Arkansas called Foulke. There was a movie made about a supposedly true big foot type creature that was from here. There is a small general store in town that sells tshirts to honor the creature. We'll be there too! The night is spent at the Atlanta, Texas state park.
Day 5 - Wednesday, July 21
My parents' anniversary. We'll celebrate by driving through a bit of Texas and up to near Oklahoma City. There are spiders in Oklahoma. Big ones. I hate spiders and may opt to sleep in the car. State park again.
Day 6 - Thursday, July 22
We pick up Route 66 in Oklahoma City and take it west through the upper square part of Texas and cross into New Mexico. We sleep at Santa Rosa Lake State Park. It's near the petrified forest. Cute!
Day 7 - Friday, July 23
Buzzing through Albuquerque, we then stat at what might be the only motel of the trip. It's a Wigwam motel in Holbrook, AZ. We'll have pictures, don't worry.
Day 8 - Saturday, July 24
We leave the comfort of Route 66 and drive north to Glen Canyon. Saw it in a hiking magazine. So why not go there? Sleep near there, we think.
Day 9 - Sunday, July 25
To celebrate Christmas in July, we're taking the day off at Glen Canyon and hiking! Sleep in the same place we spent Christmas Eve in July Night.
Day 10 - Monday, July 26
From one Canyon to the next, we head down to the Grand Canyon. We're not really sure, but we think it's against the law to not at least stop there. The night will be spent there as well.
Day 11 - Tuesday, July 27
Back to getting our kicks on Route 66! We drive through some lovely desert to a state park near Needles, California. Camp for the night.
Day 12 - Wednesday, July 28
Due to a brilliant cartographical error on my part, this night will be spent a mere 90 minutes down Route 66 from where we spent it the night before. So that leaves us basically a free day. We're so close to Vegas, that we just might hit it. We didn't want to at first, but morbid curiosity may have gotten the better of us. We're supposed to spend the night in the Mojave desert, but it's possible we'll just get a cheap motel in Vegas. Classy.
Day 13 - Thursday, July 29
We pass through Los Angeles today, thus ending our time with Route 66. We then take Rout 1 up the coast to Ventura. We're camping at a state park on the Pacific. It will be my first time seeing it. Maybe Nikki's first time too. Not Ashley though, she's been there before.
Day 14 - Friday, July 30
Up Route 1 to Big Sur. Not sure what a Sur is, but this one is promising to be pretty big. In fact, I think it's the biggest sur around these here parts.
Day 15 - Saturday, July 31
Two weeks down.... And we scurry northward to visit Cole in Santa Rosa. We'll be spending a few nights there.
Day 16 - Sunday, Aug 1
Day off at Coles!
Day 17 - Monday, Aug 2
Another day off, still at Coles!
Day 18 - Tuesday, Aug 3
Birthday. Leaving Cole's early and heading up the coast to Redwood National. Here we camp for the night.
Day 19 - Wednesday, Aug 4
From the Redwoods, we head inland to the heart of Oregon. Umpqua National Forest! Pretty, we've heard.
Day 20 - Thursday, Aug 5
Mt. Hood awaits! Staying at some state park near there. Mt. Hood is where Kubric filmed the exterior shots of The Shining.
Day 21 - Friday, Aug 6
We're supposed to be in Seattle. Probably will be. Not sure about where we'll crash for the night. But the next day is a day off.
Day 22 - Saturday, Aug 7
Three weeks! A Day off in Northern Washington state. What will we do? Tune in and find out!
Day 23 - Sunday, Aug 8
From wherever we will be to Hell's Gate, Idaho! It's a state park, but I think it's near Hell's Canyon. More than anything, it's just a place to stay for the night. But pretty, I've heard.
Day 24 - Monday, Aug 9
After a bit of travel, we wind up in Bannack State Park in Minnesota. It's a ghost town. Should be fun.
Day 25 - Tuesday, Aug 10
We have to figure this out. Only a few hours out of our way is Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It looks sort of interesting. My mom says that we wont like it. My dad says we will. I think I'm going to make them knife fight over it. The winner gets to pick if we go or not! Actually, we'll probably just flip a coin or something. The night will be spent near Salt Lake City. State park.
Day 26 - Wednesday, Aug 11
US Route 40 is really awesome! It goes through South Mountain, Maryland and it goes through Utah too! From near Provo, Utah to Estes Park, Colorado, we'll be on Route 40. The night will be spent ... I can't remember, probably a state park.
Day 27 - Thursday, Aug 12
The day gives us bounty! Carhenge! It's like Stonehenge, only made with cars. Seriously. We go from there up to Devil's Tower.
Day 28 - Friday, Aug 13
Devil's Tower Day Off! We'll rest and hike! All at the same time! Dig us!
Day 29 - Saturday, Aug 14
To the Badlands and missing Sturgis by a day. Camping in the Badlands. Fun!
Day 30 - Sunday, Aug 15
This is a driving day. We'll be on the road for about 7 hours, ending up in Kilen Woods State Park, MN. A Sunday drive.
Day 31 - Monday, Aug 16
Today we'll follow the route of the old guy from the movie The Straight Story. He drove his garden tractor across a few states to visit his dying brother. It's a true story and we'll be following in his tire tracks to a small state park in Wisconsin.
Day 32 - Tuesday, Aug 17
B-line to Chicago. Or near Chicago. We'll see. This is us going home.
Day 33 - Wednesday, Aug 18
From Chicago to Lewisburg. We'll be home late that night.
And thus ends our trip. We have a few days to veg out before having to go back to work/school.
It may seem like this trip is just driving from one State Park to another, but that's really not the case. We plotted the trip to use mostly US Routes (NOT interstates). It will be a little slower, but it will also allow us to see what small town America is really like. We'll be visiting many places that we've never even heard of. A lot of the trip is unplanned, maybe not as much as we'd like it to be, but a good chunk.
Keep watching. Here we go!
